‘Avatar 3’ Joins the Billion-Dollar Club — But Two 2025 Blockbusters Still Beat It
James Cameron adds another $1 billion hit to his record, even as two other 2025 releases outperform ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’.

The sci-fi epic cements Cameron’s legacy, while Disney dominates the year’s global box office.

It was only a matter of time. ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the fourth film directed by James Cameron to reach that milestone. The achievement further reinforces Cameron’s reputation as one of the most reliable hitmakers in cinema history.

What may surprise some viewers is that despite its massive success, ‘Avatar 3’ is not among the top two highest-grossing films of 2025 so far. With around $1.083 billion currently accumulated, it has already been overtaken by two other major releases from the same year.

The film now stands alongside ‘Titanic’, ‘Avatar’, and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ as Cameron’s fourth billion-dollar production. However, unlike its predecessors — all of which sailed past $2 billion — industry projections suggest Fire and Ash will likely top out at around $1.7 billion, still an extraordinary result by any standard.

The box office race also highlights Disney’s overwhelming dominance in 2025. The studio is behind both films outperforming Avatar 3‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘Zootopia 2’, making Disney the only major Hollywood company with multiple billion-plus hits this year.

That dominance hasn’t been without setbacks. The studio also endured notable disappointments, including ‘Snow White’, ‘Elio’, and ‘Tron: Ares’, reminding the industry that even powerhouse franchises carry financial risk.

Meanwhile, the Avatar saga continues to rewrite box office history. With three films combined, the franchise has now generated approximately $6.35 billion worldwide, securing its position as the highest-grossing trilogy of all time. The closest competitor, the Star Wars sequel trilogy, trails far behind at around $4.45 billion.

That gap is expected to widen even further — although the upcoming release of ‘Avatar 4’ will soon push the saga beyond trilogy status, ending one record while potentially creating an even bigger one.
